Nail Design Hot Trends in 2022

A fresh manicure is a perfect way to add a little something extra to your outfit. While we will always love ballet slipper pink or a classic red, why not try something a little more adventurous for your next manicure? From subtle chic detailing to bold designs, there is something for everyone with this season’s most stylish nail trends – because life is too short for boring nails.

Minimalist French Mani Summer Nail Trend

How sweet is this summery orange-and-white mani? The vibrant orange color is really cute on its own (nail artist Betina Goldstein used Static Nails Liquid Glass Lacquer Sunny Face), but if you want to add the white detailing, paint a very fine white line across the tips with a super-fine nail brush.

Fresh Neutrals

No, this isn’t particularly ground-breaking news, but just know that polished neutrals aren’t going anywhere next year. “Fresh neutrals are timeless,” says OPI brand ambassador Georgia Rae. “Clean cuticles, nourished skin and a thin layer of a sheer nude to complement your skin tone will remain a trend in 2022,” she adds.

And the best bit is, according to Rae, this trend really does work for anybody and everybody—even those who don’t like polish. “I even think short, neat nails worn bare are so chic,” she says.

Indie Nails

According to data from Pinterest, searches for “indie nails” are up 21 percent this winter. But what exactly is this nail trend all about? It’s simply taking a different approach to painting each nail. As shown here, one digit might have a checkered design, while others have swirls or a fresh take on the French manicure.

Velvet Nails

A velvet manicure relies on glitter and metallic polish to catch the light, creating a textured look that resembles, well, velvet.

Colour Block French Manicure

Similarly, the color block French manicure is another excellent way to breathe new life into the classic style. It is also a great way to add a pop of color to any outfit.

Abstract Organic Shapes

The Double French Tip is a modern take on the classic French-mani. While we will always love a good French manicure, the addition of an extra line is a fun way to spice up your nails this season.

Unique French Manicures

For a softer take on nail art, look to French manicures. But instead of white tips, you’ll see more fall monochrome colors, says Pinto.

Brown Shades

Shades of brown are the “new nudes,” says Lisa Logan, Nails.INC celebrity manicurist. Look for these colors in both matte and glittered versions.

Shades of Pink

Gone are the days of more muted, neutral pinks. Look for all shades, from bubblegum to hot pink. “Pinks were a popular choice amongst designers this season, so I expect them to have a moment next year,” says Jin Soon Choi, manicurist and owner of Jin Soon Hand and Foot Spas in NYC.

Coffin Nails

Almond shaped nails have long been a staple—and it’s something you’ll still see a lot of, says Pinto. “We’ll also see a lot of tapered square and coffin shapes in 2021.”

Light Blues

“The Pantone color of the year was a blue shade, and I expect this trend to continue into 2021,” says Soon Choi. As a nice bonus, these nail colors are universally flattering, she says.

At-Home Manicures

Simple looks that are easy to maintain and press-on sets have been very popular ever since the start of quarantine—and will continue to be as we head into another winter of restrictions, says Pinto. There are options abound online, but some salons, like Vanity Projects, also offer custom sets.

Natural Nails

Many people have been using COVID restrictions as an excuse to take a break from all the gel and acrylics to heal their nails, says Soon Choi. But that doesn’t mean abandoning your digits altogether. To ensure hands and nails still look, well, polished, Soon Choi says there’s more interest in nail care—like applying cuticle oil for hydration.

Pearl Detail

The pearl nail trend has been brewing for some time now. The best thing about this trend is how versatile it is. If you’re after something luxe, have physical pearls applied to your nails. Depending on how glamorous you want to go, you can stick one on each nail at the cuticle, or cover your nails completely. However, if you want something a little more subtle, then an iridescent pearl nail polish is a perfect alternative.

Single Nail Feature

Subtly unleash your creativity with a single nail feature. For this understated trend, paint all but one of your nails in a block color of your choice and make the remaining nail pop! A classic option is a single metallic or sparkly nail, but you could try patterns or graphics. The possibilities are endless!
